Our SEND Provision

At Hunwick Primary School, all teachers are teachers of special educational needs and provision begins within the classroom. We set high expectations for both our pupils and our staff and providing a curriculum offer that is accessible to all is of paramount importance to our school ethos. Our SENDCo supports our staff in delivering high quality SEND teaching through 1:1 meetings, team teaching, specific pupil intervention and support with creating a range of concrete and visual resources to support pupils facing barriers to learning.

The Role of the Class teacher:

  • Changing the way activities are planned and delivered
  • Matching activities to the ability/need of each child (differentiation)
  • Adapting learning materials such as equipment and activities to suit each child’s needs
  • Offer small group support

Our teachers/teaching assistants work in partnership with parents and the SENDCo to find ways to support each child with their needs, including giving parents ideas on how to help their child at home.

  •  Our SENDCo is Mrs K Barker.
  • Our Special Educational Needs Governor is Mr D Swinney.

The Role of the SENDCo:

  • Oversee the day-to-day operation of the school’s SEND policy
  • Liaise with the relevant Designated Teacher where a looked after pupil has SEND
  • Advise teachers on using a graduated approach to providing SEND support
  • Advise on the deployment of the school’s delegated budget and other resources to meet the pupil’s needs effectively
  • Liaise with parents/carers of pupils with SEND
  • Liaise with and be a key point of contact for external agencies
  • Ensure that the school keeps the records of all SEND pupils up to date
  • Work with the head teacher and school governors to ensure that the school meets its responsibilities with regard to reasonable adjustments and access arrangements.

A special educational need can be a number of different things. For example, your child may be experiencing challenges with reading, maths or self regulation, which school can help by putting additional support in at school and by working in partnership with yourself. It may also be due to an additional need which makes it harder for a child to use the same educational facilities that the school provides for the majority of children. For some children this may be a temporary difficulty, while others may have a long term need for special help.

There are four broad areas of SEND, these are:

Communication and Interaction

This area of need includes children with Autism Spectrum Condition and those with Speech, Language and Communication Needs

Cognition and Learning

This includes children with Specific Learning Difficulties, Moderate Learning Difficulties, Severe Learning Difficulties and Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties

Social, Emotional and Mental Health Difficulties

This includes any pupils who have an emotional, social or mental health need that is impacting on their ability to learn

Sensory and/or Physical Difficulties

This area includes children with hearing impairment, visual impairment, multi-sensory impairment and physical difficulties.
